It all started with red flannel pajamas and a pair of Uggs.

Years later, Oprah Winfrey is still sharing her roundup of great gifts with the world — and two Bay Area entrepreneurs have scored spots on the coveted list for 2020.

“This year, there’s a special twist,” Winfrey wrote. “Because so many people want to support Black lives any way they can, we’ve found dozens of absolutely gorgeous gifts from Black-owned businesses that deserve to be celebrated, because we believe Black lives — and Black businesses — matter. So for 2020, most of my Favorite Things are from Black-owned or -led companies.”

The Oprah’s Favorite Things list, featured online and in print in the Oprah magazine, contains 72 gift recommendations.

From Red Bay Coffee comes what founder-CEO Keba Konte calls the Motherland Gift Collection, three 12-ounce bags of their bestsellers — Motherland, Coltrane and King’s Prize — all freshly roasted in Oakland.

An entrepreneur and artist, Konte founded the roastery in 2014 as “a vehicle for diversity, inclusion, social and economic restoration, entrepreneurship, and environmental sustainability.”

According to the company, 100% of their coffee beans are “ethically sourced through direct trade (better than fair trade) agreements that result in consistently high-quality beans, and generous wages for our farmers.”

The King’s Prize beans hail from the Kochere mill in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Motherland beans are from the Kayanza province in the East African country of Burundi. And Coltrane is a single-origin coffee from Colombia.

Also making Oprah’s list is the Cast Iron Dutch Oven from celebrity chef Ayesha Curry, who this year joined Winfrey as a magazine mogul by launching a lifestyle publication, Sweet July.

The Atherton-based chef and cookbook author also co-owns the International Smoke restaurants and is planning to open a store, Sweet July, in uptown Oakland.

Curry’s hefty, enamel-covered pan comes in three colors — Brown Sugar, Sienna Red and Twilight Teal — and two sizes, 5.5 quart and 6 quart. Many retailers and websites carry her line of cookware; Macy’s is currently offering this Dutch oven at a sale price.
