MILLBRAE – A San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputy suffered smoke inhalation while helping residents escape from a burning apartment complex in Millbrae on Monday, authorities said.
The three-alarm fire was reported about 12:35 p.m. on the 1000 block of Hemlock Avenue.
The deputy, identified as Edgar Manilla, helped a woman and her two young children escape, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Manilla then returned to the complex and helped a pair of elderly residents escape.
The sheriff’s office said Manilla remained at the scene to help and was later taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. There were no immediate reports of any other injuries.
The fire displaced all residents of the apartment complex, the sheriff’s office said. The American Red Cross is providing services while temporary housing is arranged for them.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
