Dignity on Wheels
The nonprofit Dignity on Wheels is providing showers and laundry services to homeless residents in San Jose. The organization offers mobile private shower rooms, which people can use for seven-minute showers, and laundry services for up to two sets of clothes. Sharks relief fund
The San Jose Sharks have launched a relief fund for part-time staff who have lost income due to the closure of local hockey arenas and ice rinks. The funds will support more than 1,800 staff members in San Jose, Fremont and Oakland. The fund kicked off with more than $200,000, gathered through Sharks players and staff. The team is encouraging fans to donate online at sjsharks.com/covid19relief. The fund will accept donations through July 25.
Students of merit
Six San Jose students are among 42 high school seniors from 24 Bay Area schools on this year’s list of National Merit Scholars.
San Jose students who will receive corporate scholarships for their academic achievements, leadership and extracurricular success are Rohan Cherukuri, Mahika Halepete, Nellie Tonev and Jessica Jiang from The Harker School, Jerry Liu from Cupertino High School and Sarah Gao from St. Francis.
No swimming
The city of San Jose has cancelled all summer aquatic programs at Camden Pool, Fair Swim Center, Mayfair Pool and Rotary Ryland Pool. The city’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department lists all cancellations and refund information online at bit.ly/prnscancellations.
Mask work
San Jose Public Library has joined the charge to print 3D face shields and masks for hospital workers. Library staff and volunteers used the library’s own 3D printing equipment to create hundreds of face masks for local frontline organizations, shelters and nursing homes. Volunteers delivered their first donation of 220 face shields and 75 face masks to Good Samaritan Hospital last month.
Sweeping up
Although residents will not be ticketed for noncompliance during the statewide “shelter in place” order, the city requests cars still be moved to allow street sweeping to continue. Street sweeping schedules are posted online at sjenvironment.org/lookup.
Virtual Purple Museum
The Children’s Discovery Museum may be closed to visitors, but the online learning continues. The Virtual Purple Museum (www.cdm.org/virtual-museum) features story times, activities and lessons posted to Facebook every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
On Saturdays, the museum releases a themed weekend package to help keep kids and parents busy and entertained during the “shelter in place” order.
From songbook to cookbook
Broadway San Jose is moving off the stage and into the kitchen while audiences are sheltering in place. The theater company is asking people to send in recipes inspired by shows from the upcoming 2020-21 season, which will be compiled into a cookbook at the end of the month.
Entries will be eligible for prizes, including most unique ingredient, most inventive recipe and best visual submission. Recipes can be submitted through May 29 at broadwaysanjose.com/cookbook.
