A man suspected of stealing a van was taken into custody Monday afternoon after leading authorities on a pursuit in Orange County, officials said.

The incident began about 2:15 p.m. when the driver of a vehicle that Placentia police were watching took off, officials said.

By 3:30 p.m. the driver was eluding authorities on surface streets in Santa Ana, before making his way to Garden Grove.

At one point, police vehicles stopped behind the van as it was stuck in traffic near Harbor Boulevard and Trask Avenue in Garden Grove, aerial video from Sky5 showed. The van continued north on Harbor, however, once traffic continued to flow.

Soon after, the driver pulled into a parking lot in Garden Grove, with authorities in tow. The driver then continued north on Harbor, once again.

The driver also avoided a spike strip that had been laid out by authorities.

About 3:40 p.m., the driver got out of the van without putting it in park in a Garden Grove neighborhood and surrendered to authorities. The van continued down the street, scraping another vehicle, before coming to a stop, aerial video showed.

The driver was taken into custody without further incident.
