A wrong-way driver was involved in a deadly crash that prompted officials to temporarily close a portion of the 101 Freeway through Hollywood early Thursday morning.

The crash occurred just after 1 a.m. as the driver of a black 2008 BMW was headed southbound in the northbound lanes near Hollywood Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Taka Hiura said.

A total of four vehicles were involved in the crash.

The unidentified driver of the BMW sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision, Hiura said.

One other driver sustained major injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital.

The northbound freeway remained closed for several hours as crews worked to remove the vehicles.

Video showed the freeway was reopened to drivers at about 4:30 a.m.

Correction: An earlier version of this post misidentified the direction in which the crash occurred. The story has been updated.
